Last summer PRASA Western Cape (Metrorail) ran extra Sunday and public holiday trains in Cape Town, from mid-December 2025 to 11 January 2026. As of 25 October 2026 we have found no announcement of festive trains for December 2026.
What ran last festive season?
EWN reported on 11 December 2025 that:
- Sunday and public holiday trains came back from mid-December 2025 to 11 January 2026. On PRASA’s normal timetable there are no Sunday trains.
- The trains ran at off-peak fares, “from as little as R5”.
- Surfboards and bicycles were allowed during off-peak leisure hours.
- Riders were asked to be considerate during the morning work rush.
Why were the trains added?
PRASA’s Western Cape regional manager, Raymond Maseko, told EWN that residents had asked for them. Many could not reach the beaches because of traffic, especially on the southern corridor towards Muizenberg and Simon’s Town, where the roads “are completely gridlocked”.
Is there a festive timetable for December 2026?
Not yet, as far as we can find (checked 25 October 2026). Last year’s plan was announced on 11 December 2025, only a few days before it started, so this year’s news could also come late. Don’t assume last year’s dates or fares will repeat. We’ll update this page when PRASA announces this year’s plan.
How can I check?
- PRASA Western Cape’s official social media for service notices
- PRASA’s timetables at prasa.com/train-schedules
- Your station’s ticket office
- Local news (EWN, GroundUp, IOL) from early December

Will PRASA ai show festive trains?
Only once PRASA publishes a timetable for them. We never invent a train. Until then the app and this website show PRASA’s regular timetable, which has no Sunday trains.
